Date Speaker Program

We strive to offer educational programs that are genealogical or historically oriented. Frequently, in addition to our monthly featured program, we provide a short (usually 15-20 minutes) 'hornbook' session by an Education Committee member that focuses on a genealogy research topic.

March 3 Jim Jones and Education Committee "Family History Skills Day" Location: Broadmoor Branch Library, 1212 Capt Shreve Drive. Workshop lectures from 9:30 - 11:45am and guided research assistance in the genealogy department from 1 - 4pm.

March 4 Edith Smith, Author and Researcher "The WOW Factor - Working on Wonders: Waiting for you in Deed Records".

April 14 John Agan, Historian and Author "Northwest Louisiana at Statehood: 1812." This program commemorates the 200th anniversary of Louisiana as a state.

May 12 Mike Montgomery, Historian "Dr. John Sibley - Louisiana Territory's First Indian Agent, Physician, Planter, and Politician"

June 9 Linda Duff Niemier and Lillian Laird Duff, Historian and Authors "Sharecropping in North Louisiana: A Family's Struggle Through the Great Depression."

This will be a presentation and book promotion. The book is a true story of the hardships suffered during the Great Depression and WW II. Books will be available for purchase for only $13.00 each. Information about the book and its authors are here.

August 11 Russell P. Baker, Genealogist & Lecturer All day seminar. Topics:

(1) "So You Want to be a Cherokee" (This lecture explores genealogical sources of the five civilized tribes)

(2) "Camping in Canaan's Land" (An introduction to researching American church records)

(3) "Forty Acres and a Mule" (Ancestor Hunting in Original Land Entry Records"

(4) "Wanted Dead or Alive" (Looking for Southern vital records);
September 8 Fr. Pike Thomas, Pastor St. Jude Catholic Church, and Researcher "Analyzing and Abstracting the Early 1800's Barnwell County SC Probate Records"

Barnwell was a crossroads followed by many settlers in the early 1800's, with a large number departing within a generation for what was called “the west” (GA/AL/MS/LA/TX). Thus it is rich in familiar names throughout the Deep South. Father Thomas will analyze especially the rich harvest one can glean from these precious probate records.

Hornbook Presentation: Glenda Bernard presents “Sally’s Autograph Book Treasures: Any Genealogical Value?”
November 10 Philip Adderley, CGSM
“The Yellow House on the Red River: The Life Histories of Kentuckians George Washington Stoner and his Wife Lizzie H. Wilson.”

Synopsis: Kentucky natives George W. Stoner and his wife Elizabeth Wilson grew up in Cumberland and Monroe County, Kentucky; married; migrated to Tarrant County and Marion County, Texas; and finally settled in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, after the Surrender. For the next forty years they battled heat and drought, a yellow fever epidemic, the longest economic depression in U. S. history, fires, cyclones, hail storms, ice storms, and the Texas and Pacific Railroad (twice). The records they left in Louisiana alone resulted in over four hundred findings, defining not only their lives but also those of many friends, associates, and neighbors.

Note: Monthly meetings are held from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Randle T. Moore Center, 3101 Fairfield Avenue Shreveport Louisiana (Fairfield Avenue at Kings Highway). Other events are located as noted.
